This summer, the United States Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor.
The Court affirmed what many of us have always believed: parents have the right to be informed about, and to opt their children out of, school instruction that conflicts with their deeply held religious beliefs.
That ruling didn’t create a new right.
It simply confirmed a timeless truth, that the responsibility of raising children belongs first and foremost to parents, not the government. Schools exist to educate our youth, not to replace families.
At Informed Parents California (IP-CA), we have spent years helping families exercise that responsibility.
Through our Opt-Out program, which you can find at www.ip-ca.org/opt-out, we provide simple, easy-to-use forms that parents can complete online. IP-CA then files that request with your student’s school to ensure they are not exposed to classroom material that undermines your family’s values.
Over the past year alone, our program has helped protect thousands of students across California.
Parents…from all walks of life, regardless of politics, religion, or background…have come together to say: “We will decide what our children are taught on sensitive issues.”
This isn’t about being “for” or “against” any group. It’s about restoring the proper balance of authority between parents and schools.
Teachers and administrators play a vital role, but they cannot know every family’s deeply held beliefs. Parents must retain the ability to guide their children through life’s most important lessons.
If you are a parent, the message of Mahmoud v. Taylor is clear: your voice matters, and the law is on your side. But rights only remain strong when people use them.
That’s why it’s essential to file an annual opt-out form at the beginning of every school year.
Our team at IP-CA.org is here to help.
We’ve created resources, step-by-step instructions, and direct support for families who want to take this important step.
When parents stand together, we strengthen not only our families but our communities as a whole.
Every child deserves an education that equips them for success while respecting the values of the home they come from.
Protecting that principle is not a partisan issue. It is a human issue, a family issue, and a community issue.
It’s not too late! I encourage every parent in Southern California to learn more about the Opt-Out program and exercise your rights with confidence. Together, we can ensure that schools support families rather than override them.
