A House committee revealed in a letter to the FDA that U.S. biopharmaceutical companies have been conducting drug trials with the Chinese military for over ten years, NY Post reported.
Bipartisan House Committee demands answers from FDA on US-China drug trial collaborations
Leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party wrote to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf, requesting details about these drug trials.
The letter highlights that hundreds of these clinical trials have been conducted in China at medical centers and hospitals connected to the Chinese military. This includes an ongoing trial for a cutting-edge Alzheimer’s treatment. Some of the facilities involved are the PLA’s General Hospital and Medical School, the PLA’s Air Force Medical University, and the Hospital of the PLA, which is run by the PLA’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS).
The House committee members who signed the letter include Chairman John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), Rep. Neal Dunn (R-Fla.), and Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.).
“These collaborative research activities raise serious concerns that critical Intellectual Property is at risk of being transferred to the [Chinese military] or being co-opted under the People’s Republic of China’s National Security Law,” the lawmakers wrote.
“Conversely, there are also concerns with the trustworthiness of clinical trial data produced overseas from [People’s Liberation Army] institutions,” they said.
Trials conducted in Xinjiang amid genocide accusations
The U.S. Commerce Department has already prohibited companies from sharing technology with AMMS due to concerns about national security risks.
Additionally, some trials have taken place in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where China has been accused of committing genocide against the Muslim Uyghur population. In these horrific “re-education camps,” some female victims have been raped or sterilized, and there are reports that others have even had their organs harvested.
“As we know, companies have no way to ensure that clinical trials conducted in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region are truly voluntary,” the House Select Committee members emphasize in their letter.
In the letter, the lawmakers stated, “Given this, we believe that U.S. biopharmaceutical entities could be unintentionally profiting from data obtained through clinical trials where the CCP forced victim patients to participate.”
The lawmakers have requested that the FDA commissioner respond by October 1, indicating whether the agency has formally reviewed any of these clinical drug trials or uncovered the full extent of the collaboration with the Chinese military.
