The Teaching Zoo is thrilled to announce the grand opening of “Rajah’s Retreat”, a modern exhibit that will provide a safe and enriching environment for tigers Neil and Karma, while offering visitors an unforgettable experience.
Our grand opening, press day, will take place on Tuesday September 24th at 3:00pm at 7075 Campus Rd. Moorpark CA 93021.
This special occasion will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, tours of the habitat and educational talks by our student trainers and staff.
Rajah’s Retreat was designed to offer expansive space, a pool, naturalistic landscape and interactive elements for guests. Two huge viewing windows are sure to delight kids of all ages, while giving the opportunity to stand face to face with a tiger.
“We are excited to share this incredible experience with our community, while promoting animal welfare and raising awareness for these magnificent animals”, said Alisa Behar, Zoo Operations Supervisor.
Rajah’s Retreat broke ground in late 2021 and symbolizes the jumpstart to modernizing The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. Funded by private donations, zoo fundraising events and the college it is, to date, the largest fundraising campaign in The Teaching Zoo’s fifty-year history. “The amount of energy dedicated to this project is a testament to our dedication to these two tigers that we rescued, raised and watched grow her”, said Mara Rodriguez, Zoo Development Coordinator. “We hope Neil and Karma serve as ambassadors for tiger’s world wide and help spark an interest in saving this magnificent species in the wild. There is no better way to spark that interest than by making a personal connection, and that can happen at Rajah’s Retreat”
The Teaching Zoo is the living, breathing classroom for the world-renowned Animal Care and Training program. This major has trained animal care professionals for fifty years and continues to serve as a flagship program at Moorpark College.
